After creating resources to mirror the sample papers we moved on to analyse the content of the sample papers against the content of the 'Developing Numerical Reasoning' strand of the LNF. We then created more resources to fill the gaps and create a bank of resources that incorporates all the 'Developing Numerical Reasoning' elements across a variety of contexts and problems. The questions are designed to mirror the style of questions that children will meet in the summer tests, allowing these sessions to double as preparation for a test senario. In some cases, the reasoning questions stray into the realm of problem solving. This was a conscious decision as the two go hand in hand.
There will be (by summer 2014) 21 guided sessions for each year group (7 per term). They are progressive, meaning that, for example, Y6 Summer Term Session 1 builds on Y6 Spring Session 1 which built on Y6 Autumn Session 1. The autumn sessions have been pitched at a lower level of numeracy while keeping the same type of reasoning, whereas the summer sessions are a pitched at the same level as the sample papers. The spring sessions sit nicely between the two.
If you have chosen 'Option 2' (see theory page) then due to the fortnightly cycle, 21 sessions per year group is everything you need to equip your school and teachers to start digging into guided group numerical reasoning.
To view the materials, just click the 'Materials' button - don't worry, no password is required. You will be able to view the resources or click to open in google drive - which is more user friendly.
After the 'Guided Sessions' materials are released to staff, follow up resources will need to be created by individual teachers. When these are created they will be shared across the cluster schools, thus creating a large bank of follow up/supplementary materials. If you have materials to submit to the resource bank please email them to Tom Hills (see contact page) who will add them. Please state in your email which 'Guided Session' they correspond too.
If you adopt a carousel style to your guided reasoning sessions, you are going to need some further resources for the children to work with. As we find good ideas/products, we'll list them here. Not all of these will be strictly reasoning resources - more likely a mixture of reasoning and problem solving.
